Wer bin ich?

About me

Mein Name ist Kathi Schmid und ich komme aus einem 7.000-Seelen-Dorf in Bayern, Deutschland, auch als "Daheim" bekannt.

Ich bin 19 Jahre alt und habe im Juni 2014 mein Abitur am Ludwig-Thoma-Gymnasium gemacht.

Meine Hobbys sind Lesen, Freunde treffen, Fotografieren, Reisen, Sprachen, Wandern, Angeln, Fußball,... seit kurzem bin ich sogar Hobbyimmobilienmaklerin ;)

Nach dem entwicklungspolitischen Freiwilligendienst in Costa Rica möchte ich Lehramt Englisch/Spanisch/Französisch fürs Gymnasium studieren.

Nach meinem Auslandsschuljahr in Pennsylvania, USA 2011/2012 hat mich die Reiselust gepackt. Aber "einfach nur" Urlaub war mir nicht mehr genug. Ich wollte die Menschen kennenlernen, nicht als Tourist, sondern als Nachbar. Ich wollte die Kultur und die Sprache aus erster Hand erfahren und kennenlernen. Schulbücher, Berichte, Dokumentationen,....all das hat mir einfach nicht mehr gereicht. Noch bevor ich im Juni 2012 wieder in Deutschland war, stand für mich fest: Nach dem Abi geht's nach Costa Rica! WIE war noch nicht klar, nur DASS. Die einzige Bedingung, die ich mir damals gestellt hatte, war, dass ich in der 11.Klasse bleiben muss, damit ich zeitlich gesehen "nur ein gap year" habe. Nach einem halben Jahr wieder in Deutschland war dann aber klar, dass ich meine eigene Bedingung erfüllen kann und dass es langsam Zeit wird sich über Möglichkeiten, ein Jahr in Costa Rica zu verbringen, zu informieren. Erstmal hab ich mich über einen Aupairdienst informiert. Ich wollte aber nicht immer nur in einer Familie arbeiten und außer den Familienmitgliedern keine anderen Einheimischen kennenlernen. Außerdem sind Familien, die Aupairs aufnehmen, meist wohlhabender, was in Costa Rica nicht der normalen Durchschnittsfamilie entspricht. Also musste ich nach einer Möglichkeit suchen, mit den Einheimischer mehrerer Bevölkerungsschichten zusammenzuleben. Über eine Auslandsdoku ist ein Freiwilligendienst näher in meinen Fokus gerückt. Und durch eine Freundin, die ich in Taizé kennengelernt habe, das weltwärts-Programm. Ich habe also viel im Internet gesurft und mich über weltwärts-Partner informiert und mich auch bei einigen davon, die auf mein Wunschprofil gepasst haben, beworben. Wie es der Zufall so wollte, war mein Favorit nach dem Orientierungskurs auch genau die Organisation mit welcher meine Taizé-Freundin gerade zu dieser Zeit in Georgien war. Als im Dezember 2013 dann der langersehnte Brief kam, dass Brot für die Welt sich die Zusammenarbeit mit mir vorstellen kann, war ich überglücklich! Ich habe sofort zurückgeschrieben und die Suche (auf Seiten der Entsendeorga) nach einem geeigneten Einsatzplatz für mich fing an. Im Januar kam dann der konkrete Einsatzplatzvorschlag und ich freue mich schon sehr auf "mein" Projekt. Im Juli 2014 fand in Berlin der 2,5-wöchige AKF (Ausreisekurs für Freiwillige) von Brot für die Welt statt. Wir haben dort sehr viel gelernt, z.B. wie Entwicklungspolitik funktioniert, dass man im Leben mehrere Rollen einnimmt und sich das auch bewusst machen sollte und wie verschiedene Erfahrungen die Wahrnehmung beeinflussen können (Kulturkompetenz). Natürlich stand noch viel mehr auf dem Programm, aber das jetzt alles aufzulisten, würde viel zu lange dauern. Du fragst Dich jetzt vielleicht, ob ich überhaupt weiß, was ich eigentlich zurücklasse. Klar weiß ich das! Eine wundervolle Familie, den besten Freund auf der ganzen Welt und supertolle Freunde, die mich alle unterstützen und immer für mich da sind.

Warum ich trotzdem den Schritt wage? Weil es eine einzigartige Chance ist, die es wert ist genutzt zu werden! :)

Costa Rica, ich komme!

My name is Kathi Schmid and I come from a town with 7.000 inhabitants in Bavaria, Germany, which is also known as “home”.

I am 19 years old and graduated high school in June 2014.

My hobbies are Reading, hanging out with friends, taking pictures, Travelling, Languages, Hiking, Fishing, playing soccer,… and I just started out as hobby-realtor :)

After my volunteer service I want to study to become a high school language teacher for English, Spanish and French.

After my high school year in Pennsylvania, USA in 2011/2012 the wish to travel the world always stayed with me. But I wasn’t satisfied by only going to a place for spending my vacation there anymore. I wanted to get to know the people there not as a tourist, but as a neighbor. I wanted to gain firsthand experience in culture and language. Schoolbooks, reports, TV documentaries,… all that wasn’t enough for me anymore. Even before I came back to Germany in June 2012 I had a plan figured out in my head: After graduating high school I will go to Costa Rica! I didn’t know yet HOW I wanted to manage to go there. I only knew THAT I was going to manage it somehow. My plan was only subject to one self-set condition: I had to make it through Junior year without getting held back (or you could also say “being allowed to skip 10^th grade which I spent in the US). Time wise I wanted to only spend one gap year. After one semester back in Germany it was clear that I was going to make it, so the time came for me to start looking into possibilities to spend a year abroad, in Costa Rica. First I was looking into an Aupair stay. But I was afraid that if I was living and working with only one family, I could maybe not get a chance to get to know more local people. Also, people who can afford an Aupair-girl are more privileged which is not the norm in Costa Rica. Therefore I started thinking about other possibilities of going abroad with a program that would allow me to get to know people of all different backgrounds. Through a TV documentary I was introduced to the volunteer service programs. And trough a friend, who I got to know at a youth retreat in Taizé, France, I found out about the weltwärts-program. I started researching online about it and looking for weltwärts-organizations which provided the kind of work I wanted to go into. Then I applied. As luck would have it my own favorite organization after the orientation meetings was the same organization my Taizé-friend was currently staying in Georgia with. I was more than happy when in December 2013 the letter from Bread for the World arrived saying that they consider me for their program!   

I answered at once and their search for a suitable project for me started. In January 2014 I got the information that they found a project which they think would fit me and I also fit the project. Since then I am looking forward to “my” year in “my” project. In July 2014 Bread for the World hosted a 2.5-weeks AKF (before-departure-seminar for volunteers) in Berlin. There we learned a lot about what was ahead of us, e.g. how development politics work, that you have multiple roles in your life and need to be conscious of that fact and how different experiences can change the way you look at things (cultural differences). Of course there was a lot more packed into our schedule, but to list all of it would take way too long. You are very welcome to continue reading in my blog how my adventure proceeds in the future :)

You might ask yourself now if I am aware of what I am leaving behind. And I can only answer: Of course I am! I am leaving a wonderful family, the best boyfriend in the whole world and great friend who always support me and are there for me.

Why am I going away anyway? Because it is a once in a lifetime chance which is worth being taken! :)
